Just Coat with Gunite to Create a Tough, Watertight Dam

It may probably seem a little odd to learn the process used to create a Gunite dam or a family swimming pool was first invented as long ago as the early 90s by a taxidermist living in the United States. His application was rather different as was the material he used but the pneumatic gun that was the patented tool needed to perform the operation lent its name to the material widely used today.

He took dry plaster and, using compressed air, combined it with water to spray the mixture into the moulds he created in the shape of various animals. The process used today for creating much larger structures that are required to operate under heavy loads employs not plaster but a dry mix of cement and sand. Discharged via hose under pressure as before, water is introduced at the nozzle to create the final concrete layer that will then set into a solid, sealed coating on the installation surface.

In the case of a small, ornamental pond, for instance, a suitable size hole is first excavated and then lined with a thin sheet of plastic in order to create a waterproof seal and, on top this, the mixture may then be sprayed directly. On the much larger scale required for the construction of a water storage facility, it is necessary to begin by levelling or excavating the surface. Construction requires a circular foundation to support the wall which, in turn, requires that a cylindrical steel former is assembled and positioned to act as the mould. For added strength, steel mesh is positioned against the interior of the former and separated from it by spacers. The base is similarly reinforced and the spraying begun, continuing until the desired thickness is achieved,

After smoothing the upper edges of the wall, it only remains to fit a cover if required. The structure may, of course be left open. As an alternative, Aquadam offers the choice of covering the finished Gunite dam with or shade cloth or using PVC, steel or concrete.
